ABANDONED Flint: Surging Cancer Rates, Poisoned Teens Committing Suicide Amidst ONGOING Water Crisis
“This is an abandoned generation,” Bishop Bernadel Jefferson told Jordan about an increase in poisoned Flint children committing suicide. We also learned about ALARMING rates of new cancers in Flint
Hey folks, it’s Jordan.
We’re on Day three of our reporting trip to Flint—I’m proud to say my 20th trip since 2016. This ON-THE-GROUND reporting costs a lot of money but is vitally important. Please SUPPORT US as a paying Status Coup member for $5-10 bucks a month. You can also DONATE to help fund this trip.
For those who’ve watched Status Coup for years, you know why I’ve stayed on the still raging Flint water crisis…
I have a major issue with Americans being poisoned by their government, the government launching an unprecedented coverup, and then leaving the victims to fend for themselves and slowly die.
Sadly, this reporting trip—in which we’ve already filmed 5 interviews for a mini-documentary we are making for the 10-year-anniversary of the water crisis—is confirming what I’ve always feared. Ten years after the poisoning began, the slow crawl of residents’ dying is now…accelerating.
“Throat cancer, brain cancer, and stomach cancer is up 500 percent,” Arthur Woodson, a longtime activist who helped spearhead an ongoing cancer study in Flint, told me about the alarming results.
And then there’s the matter of the children in Flint…
“What really concerns me just this last year, the young people, teenagers and children, that are committing suicide,” Bishop Bernadel Jefferson told me about an increase in young people—stricken with brain damage from consuming toxic water for years—ending their own lives. With pain in her eyes, Jefferson also talked about her own grandson, who like so many children in Flint was doing well in school before the water switch, but years later, nosedived to getting F grades in school.
“This is an abandoned generation,” Jefferson said about the poisoned children who are now poisoned teens in Flint.
This morning, I shot a special video for paying Status Coup members where I took you behind-the-scenes of all the different balls Jon Farina and I are juggling on-the-ground while doing the job that, normally, outlets with more resources and funding typically have 5-10 staffers doing. Status Coup members can watch the video HERE.
Not a member? SUPPORT Status Coup’s ON-THE-GROUND reporting as a member for $5-10 bucks a month to unlock this video and other great member perks.
We’re off now to shoot more interviews with residents. I’ll also likely be going LIVE at some point today so be on the lookout for that. As always, thanks for your support.
