ON-THE-GROUND Day 4 of UAW Strike: "Wage Slavery" and Canadian Strike?
"This is wage slavery...we can't even afford a cat, forget kids!" Dominique, the wife of Stellantis worker Logan, told Jordan. Now on Day 4 of UAW Strike, Ford in Canada may go on strike at midnight.
Hey folks, it’s Jordan.
I’m writing this before we head to Toledo Ohio to cover the Stellantis strike picket lines. After that we might head to…Ontario Canada!
That’s right, north of the border. That’s because, at midnight, the contract between Unifor, the Canadian union that represents auto workers, and the big 3 car companies expires. Thus far, Unifor and the car companies are far apart in negotiations on wages and other benefits like pensions. Unifor has chosen Ford as the “target” company, meaning Ford workers would go on strike at midnight.
If there is a strike, we’re not sure if we will go LIVE…unfortunately, broadcasting internationally is A LOT more expensive because we don’t have an international data plan for our live-streaming equipment. One livestream can cost us $500-$1,000 in data roaming charges. But, we will play it by ear and see if we can pull it off. Yesterday, I interviewed another dozen or so workers from the Ford picket lines in Wayne Michigan. One married couple’s story really stood out to me.
"This is wage slavery...we can't even afford a cat, forget kids!” Dominique, the wife of Logan, a Stellantis worker, told me. Logan chimed in: “We can't even afford animals, we can't even afford house plants. This fight really goes far beyond the UAW, this is happening all across America.”
Years ago,, Logan was laid off from the Belvidere Illinois assembly plant and was out of work for 18 months. He finally got a job at Stellantis in Michigan—but had to move 5 HOURS AWAY from his family.
"Only one day a week I get to see him on Sundays," Dominique told me.
How in the world can our politicians claim America is the envy of the world when our workers literally have to move away from their families—and only see their loved ones once a week—just to economically survive?!?!?
Getting these stories out there is why Status Coup exists. Thank you so much for your support.
